Pear slices with sheep cheese and honey

I was a bit peckish mid-afternoon today, so I decided to whip up something fun:  pear slices with farmers market sheep cheese drizzled with honey.  The sweet, crunchy, juicy pear and the creamy, salty cheese balance prefectly.  And the combination of fiber from the fruit and protein and fat from the cheese make this a very filling snack.

This is one of my favorite dishes, which I based on an appetizer served at one of my favorite Italian restaurants.  You can serve it as an appetizer, dessert, or just a classy snack.  Just slice up some fruit (apples and pears are good), add some shavings or crumbles of a good cheese, and drizzle with honey.  Typically, I add some toasted nuts as well.  My all-time favorite variation of this dish is apples with goat cheese and toasted walnuts.  Figs with ricotta and pistachios is also fun.  I definitely wouldn’t use lowfat cheese for this…you really want the flavor of a real, high quality cheese.  This is definitely a situation where using the real thing in moderation is the way to go.
