Mystery Green

Dear readers, I need your help.  What is this green???? I bought two big bunches of it at the farmers market and I have no clue what it is.  The leaves are relatively tender…not tough like kale.  The stalks taste like bok choy, but the leaves have a different flavor.

I would much appreciate any hints!

Have any of you ever bought a mystery ingredient at the market or grocery store or in a CSA box?

  1. It kinda looks like a mixture of bok choy and chard!

  2. hello! i’m usually a lurker – sorry. i love your blog. anyway, isn’t that chard? looks like it to me.

  3. I was going to say chard. It can’t be mustard greens, right?

  4. My guess would have been chard, but I’m really not sure.

  5. I’m going to go with the others. It could be fun to experiment with this green!

  6. Looks like tatsoi to me. You can either eat it raw or cook it.

  7. It doesn’t taste like chard or mustard greens to me. Then again, I usually buy rainbow chard, so if the flavor is very different, I might be fooled. Also, I think of chard as having a pretty tough stem that needs to be sauteed before eating, and this is very tender and is very tasty raw.

  8. Maybe it’s “Chinese tender greens” like I eat at Imperial Gardens!

  9. Um…? Gosh, you’ve got me! Enjoy it anyway 🙂

  10. i think it is a type of bok choy!

  11. I have no idea, but what fun!
